Summer Season 2025: The Nicéphore Niépce House Welcomes You

This summer, from July 2 to August 31, 2025, the Nicéphore Niépce House will once again welcome visitors from around the world to Saint-Loup-de-Varennes, in Burgundy. A landmark in the invention of photography, this historic house invites you to explore the fascinating world of one of the 19th century’s greatest innovators.
At the Origins of Photography
It was within the walls of this peaceful home that Nicéphore Niépce created, in 1824, the first permanent photographic image, marking the beginning of a visual revolution. Even today, the house retains the atmosphere of that pioneering era: period objects, reconstructed camera obscuras, and traces of experimentation bring to life the creative momentum of the photographer-inventor.
Guided tours take you through the authentic spaces where Niépce lived and worked, and introduce you to the heliographic process, the direct forerunner of modern photographic techniques. A unique journey into the past, at the crossroads of art, science, and technology.
A Recognized and Honored Site
Designated a “Maison des Illustres” (House of the Illustrious) in 2013 by the French Ministry of Culture, the Nicéphore Niépce House benefits from the support of the Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Fine Arts. It stands as a living testament to the history and legacy of the image.
Two Centuries of Photography to Celebrate
On the occasion of the bicentenary of the invention of photography (1824–2024), the Niépce House stands as a central site of commemoration. Modest in size but immense in historical significance, this heritage site embodies the origin of a now-universal visual language. Since 1999, the international photography school Spéos has been committed to preserving and enhancing this exceptional place. Its efforts in public outreach, cultural mediation, and heritage conservation actively contribute to passing on the photographic legacy.
