Photo: \u00a9Harris Fogel.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reproduction du texte anglais paru dans <em>The Getty Conservation Institute Newsletter 19.1 (Spring 2004), <\/em>p. 27 :<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00ab\u00a0Last November the GCI and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.utexas.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin<\/a>&nbsp;organized an international symposium on research related to&nbsp;<i>View from the Window at Le Gras&nbsp;<\/i>(1826)\u2014the world&rsquo;s first permanent photograph from nature\u2014and the work of its creator, Joseph Nic\u00e9phore Ni\u00e9pce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attended by more than one hundred participants, the symposium, entitled \u00ab\u00a0At First Light,\u00a0\u00bb was held at the Ransom Center. The center&rsquo;s newly renovated exhibition space includes a permanent display of the first photo and a special exhibit of artifacts and rarely seen historical documents related to the work and its rediscovery in 1952 by photo historian Helmut Gernsheim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the four-day symposium, a number of new research initiatives and ongoing research projects were presented. The GCI provided results from the first in-depth scientific examination of the first photo, conducted at the Getty Center in July 2002 (see&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.getty.edu\/conservation\/publications_resources\/newsletters\/pdf\/v17n2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>Conservation<\/i>, vol. 17, no. 2, page 23<\/a>). In addition, the Institute gave details of its design of a new, oxygen-free protective enclosure for the photo, which will enhance its long-term conservation and allow for constant monitoring of the enclosure&rsquo;s internal environment. Also discussed was the development of a working hypothesis about visual changes of the photograph due to aging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interlaced among the research projects were art historical, historical, scientific, and art conservation presentations related to the first photo. These included presentations on the preservation history of the first photograph, an in-depth investigation of the home where the photo was taken, Ni\u00e9pce&rsquo;s career as an inventor and scientist, Ni\u00e9pce&rsquo;s correspondence and letters, and Ni\u00e9pce&rsquo;s place among early researchers in photography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new, official reproduction of the first photo\u2014the first unmanipulated image of the photograph\u2014was also unveiled. It is the result of work by photographers and scientists from the GCI and the J. Paul Getty Museum who utilized classical, ultraviolet, infrared, and digital photography in their effort to capture the image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The symposium concluded with a panel discussion examining the many unresolved scientific and historical research issues regarding the first photo. L&rsquo;espace d&rsquo;exposition r\u00e9cemment r\u00e9nov\u00e9 du centre comprend une pr\u00e9sentation permanente de la premi\u00e8re photographie ainsi qu&rsquo;une exposition sp\u00e9ciale d&rsquo;artefacts et de documents historiques rarement vus, li\u00e9s \u00e0 cette \u0153uvre et \u00e0 sa red\u00e9couverte en 1952 par l&rsquo;historien de la photographie Helmut Gernsheim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Durant les quatre jours du symposium, plusieurs nouvelles initiatives de recherche et des projets en cours ont \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sent\u00e9s. De plus, l&rsquo;Institut a d\u00e9taill\u00e9 la conception d&rsquo;une nouvelle enceinte de protection sans oxyg\u00e8ne pour la photographie, visant \u00e0 am\u00e9liorer sa conservation \u00e0 long terme et \u00e0 permettre une surveillance constante de l&rsquo;environnement interne de cette enceinte. Une hypoth\u00e8se de travail concernant les changements visuels de la photographie dus au vieillissement a \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 abord\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les projets de recherche ont \u00e9t\u00e9 entrecoup\u00e9s de pr\u00e9sentations portant sur l&rsquo;histoire de l&rsquo;art, l&rsquo;histoire, les sciences et la conservation des \u0153uvres d&rsquo;art en lien avec la premi\u00e8re photographie. Ces interventions ont inclus des discussions sur l&rsquo;histoire de la pr\u00e9servation de cette photographie, une enqu\u00eate approfondie sur la maison o\u00f9 la photo a \u00e9t\u00e9 prise, la carri\u00e8re de Ni\u00e9pce en tant qu&rsquo;inventeur et scientifique, sa correspondance et ses lettres, ainsi que sa place parmi les premiers chercheurs en photographie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La nouvelle reproduction officielle de la premi\u00e8re photographie, la premi\u00e8re image non manipul\u00e9e de cette \u0153uvre, a \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9voil\u00e9e. Ce projet est le fruit du travail de photographes et de scientifiques du GCI et du J. Paul Getty Museum, utilisant des techniques de photographie classique, ultraviolette, infrarouge et num\u00e9rique pour capturer l&rsquo;image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le symposium s&rsquo;est conclu par une table ronde examinant les nombreuses questions scientifiques et historiques encore non r\u00e9solues concernant la premi\u00e8re photographie.
