Construite en 1684, cette machine situ\u00e9e \u00e0 Bougival, sur la Seine, \u00e9levait l\u2019eau sur une distance d&rsquo;un kilom\u00e8tre et une d\u00e9nivellation de cent cinquante m\u00e8tres.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les fr\u00e8res Ni\u00e9pce imagin\u00e8rent un nouveau principe de machine :<br>\u00ab&nbsp;<em>La th\u00e9orie de cette Machine que nous nommons pompe hydrostatique, r\u00e9pose sur un principe simple qui consiste dans l&rsquo;\u00e9quilibre de deux colonnes d&rsquo;eau dont les hauteurs sont en raison inverses de leurs diam\u00e8tres. L&rsquo;une de ces colonnes repr\u00e9sente la puissance, et l&rsquo;autre la r\u00e9sistance. Pour transmettre l&rsquo;action de la premi\u00e8re, nous n&rsquo;avons pas eu besoin de r\u00e9courir au syst\u00e8me des roues et des l\u00e9viers. La force motrice agit d&rsquo;une mani\u00e8re directe. Elle est ind\u00e9pendante du mouvement de l&rsquo;eau : la perte de ce liquide, ne sert qu&rsquo;\u00e0 d\u00e9terminer la succession des effets. Deux corps de pompe, deux pistons, trois soupapes, et un marteau ; voil\u00e0 tout ce qui constitue le m\u00e9canisme de la machine proprement dite. [\u2026] Cette machine n&rsquo;est termin\u00e9e que depuis quelques jours : notre intention est de la pr\u00e9senter \u00e0 l&rsquo;Institut<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb.<br>lettre \u00e0 L. Carnot, 31 d\u00e9cembre 1807<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deux ans plus tard, le 8 d\u00e9cembre 1809, ils ont apport\u00e9 des perfectionnements \u00e0 leur machine&nbsp;:<br>\u00ab&nbsp;<em>La machine a subi des changements consid\u00e9rables dans plusieurs de ses parties. Le m\u00e9canisme de son mouvement est mieux soign\u00e9 : ses pistons r\u00e9unissent \u00e0 l&rsquo;avantage d&rsquo;\u00eatre plus exacts, celui d&rsquo;offrir beaucoup moins de r\u00e9sistance. Nous l&rsquo;avons soumise \u00e0 des \u00e9preuves r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e9es, d&rsquo;o\u00f9 il r\u00e9sulta qu&rsquo;avec une ch\u00fbte de quatre pi\u00e9s quatre pouces , elle \u00e9l\u00e8ve \u00e0 onze pi\u00e9s les sept vingtquatri\u00e8mes de l&rsquo;Eau qu&rsquo;elle perd<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carnot r\u00e9pond le 28 d\u00e9cembre 1809. Ils ont trop attendu car l&rsquo;\u2019Empereur a pris lui-m\u00eame la d\u00e9cision de demander \u00e0 l&rsquo;ing\u00e9nieur P\u00e9rier (1742-1818) de construire une machine \u00e0 feu, autrement dit une machine \u00e0 vapeur, pour faire fonctionner les pompes de Marly. En comparaison avec d\u2019autres projets, Carnot appr\u00e9cie la machine des fr\u00e8res Ni\u00e9pce.
